Matthew Black, the owner and manager, is a 5th generation Yamba local. Matt has grown up in Angourie spending his childhood surfing the beaches in the area and then as a teen graduating to the world famous local point breaks. Matt knows his way around the local beaches better than anyone.

Yamba Angourie Surf School isn't just a business - It's a reflection of a lifelong love affair with the Clarence Valley coastline.
As a proud & passionate 5th generation Yamba local, the ocean has always been in my backyard and my DNA.
With family roots running deep through the Clarence Valley, Yamba Angourie Surf School is built on that lifelong love & respect for this coast, the community, and its world-class waves.
For over a century, both sides of my family have lived, worked, fished and swum in these pristine waters of Yaegl Country.
On one side, the Black family has spent over a century fishing the local waters of Yaegl Country, learning to read the rhythm of the ocean. The exact tides, wind and waves that change the shape of our coast and make this region a world-class playground.
On the other side runs the legendary water bloodline of the Teece family. Part of a family of natural-born water champions. This includes the legendary Rex "Tiger" Teece - a Yamba SLSC club champion and iconic surf lifesaver famously known for swimming laps of the Angourie Blue Pools whilst towing a heavy drum behind him, and the man the locals called on to perform heroic rescues when anyone got into trouble in heavy seas.
When I took over the reins of Yamba's Original Surf School from my good mate and three-time Australian Surfing Champion, Jeremy Walters, my vision was to blend that deep maritime heritage with an exclusive, high-energy environment where absolutely everyone feels welcome.
Our deep local roots allow us to employ a legendary crew of homegrown local instructors who share this respect and passion for Yaegl Country and know our pristine beaches inside and out.
Operating across Yamba's iconic beaches and right on the edge of the world-renowned Angourie National Surfing Reserve and Yuraygir National Park, our crew know every break, sandbank, and swell direction like the back of their hands.

ESTABLISHED IN 2001
Yamba-Angourie Surf School was born in July 2001 when founder Jeremy chose family life over the world tour following the birth of his oldest son, Dakoda. For nearly two decades, Jeremy poured his heart into creating the area's premier surf school.
When Jeremy passed the torch to me, I was thrilled to guide this iconic surf school into its next era. My goal has been simple: to protect, honor and build upon that incredible foundational legacy, keeping the original community spirit, expert local coaching, and fun vibes alive.
